Vintage Sewing Machine

I made this picture in Blender and framed it for my sister's birthday on March 15th. I didn't finish it until the day after her birthday so I didn't end up giving it to her until yesterday. (She lives away.) She seemed to like it and, I hope you will too! It's been probably one of the more fun projects that I've done. I also did a lot of post-processing with Gimp so what you see here didn't come straight out of blender. :-)

WOW! That's pretty impressive! Nice detail!

It would take me a long time to figure out how to make the spoked wheel :-)

Thank you! Yes, the spoked wheel did require some thinking. I think I ended up making one section then duplicating it.

Oh, SpinDup?

That looks great! How long did it take you to make that?

Matt said...

Yes, I used SpinDup I think. It didn't work perfectly so I had to clean up the mesh and remove double vertices. I think there might still be a few double vertices that I missed. :0

I started it probably in the later part of January. But I didn't work on it quite a while. Before I knew it, it was already only a week until her birthday and I hadn't even finished modeling the sewing machine. Luckily the table wasn't hard to model and texturing went faster than I thought it would.

I originally planned to make the whole foot-pedal thing, but because of lack of time I decided to go a bit more modern where they mounted a motor on the back instead of a foot pedal.

That looks SWEET!
Good job!
How long was the render time??

Matt said...

I don't remember... I think it was around 3 hours. I'm using an old Pentium 4 1.7 ghz with less than 1 gb of memory though. On a faster computer it normally wouldn't take that long. Render times are actually fast on my computer for being so old because I'm running Linux.

I WANT LINUX! *sniff* *sniff*

I guess I can use Eagle for making cicruit boards, but I still need Windows for all my video software :-) If it were just an NLE, I could probably find a Linux version, but VisionLab and all the utilities I use... MAN! Life isn't fair! :D

Matt said...

Have you tried running VisionLab with WINE?

Great to see someone else getting in to Blender and Linux, I found out about both about 2 years ago and have almost never looked back. Had to use W*indows yesterday for some but got so fed up with it I gave up!

In reply: Most things have a Linux equivalent, or sometimes a port and non-graphics-ee things often works with WINE.

Great image (good wood texture), could maybe be improved by adding some dirt or something to the sewing machine, maybe even a dent?

keep it up!
